About ASM International
American Society for Metals was founded in 1913, in Detroit, Michigan, as the 'Steel Treaters Club'. This club was rechristened as American Society of Metals (ASM) in 1933 to deal with all aspects metals. In 1983, the Society expanded its technical scope, beyond metals, to include other engineered materials like composites, polymers, ceramics, and electronic materials. By 1986, the progress made was substantial towards the stated goal of becoming the world's society for engineered materials. That has led to change in name to ASM International. The Society's Head Quarters is in Materials Park, Ohio State, USA. (35 miles east of Cleveland in USA). Today, ASM is the world's largest association of metals-centric materials scientists and engineers with over 30,000 members worldwide. ASM is dedicated to informing, educating and connecting the materials community to solve problems and stimulate innovation around the world.

ASM Bangalore Chapter: ASM Bangalore Chapter is actively involved in dissemination of Materials centric knowledge among working professionals, researches and academicians. ASM Bangalore chapter began its activities in the year 2006 and was initially hand held by ASM Chennai Chapter. Since then it has dedicated itself in spreading information based on materials among various stake holders.
Bangalore being a strategic city of India, is home to several major automotive, aerospace, defense related industries, R&D institutes and also home to Indian Institute of Science Banglore. Some of the well known companies/R& D institutes located in Bangalore are Toyota Kirloskar Motor, TVS, TAFE, Mercedes, Bosch, GM, SKF, Kenna Metal, different divisions of HAL, NAL, ISRO and DRDO Labs. Bangalore is also known as “Machine Tool Capital of India”. One of the asia’s largest industrial area PEENYA INDUSTRIAL AREA has several small and medium sized companies which cater to the above said firms and R&D institutes. Over the years some of the SME’s have evolved and are capable of developing/manufacturing world class products, of highest quality and are able to export them to several countries around the world. Thousands of engineering professionals work in Bangalore. Hence it is imperative that such professionals need continuous support in the form of high quality knowledge or information especially in the field of materials. That’s exactly, is the reason why ASM Bangalore chapter took its birth. It has relentlessly imparted information/knowledge in the area of materials to this professionals/Engineering community.
Under the able leadership of present Chairman Mr. V. Babu Sathian- a well known metallurgist and with the support of equally capable office bearers, ASM Bangalore chapter is gaining wide popularity and is actively involved in conducting many programs such as workshops/Technical lectures/Seminars/Conferences in fields of Metals centric materials, Heat Treatment, Failure Analysis, Corrosion, Welding, Coatings, Composite Materials etc. ASM Bangalore Chapter has a good blend of members both from Industries, Academic and R&D Centers. It is actively involved in supporting and participating in the Technological and knowledge up-gradation of Engineering community involved with materials.
Prime objectives of ASM Bangalore Chapter are
1. To disseminate materials centric information among professionals by organizing seminars, lectures, one/two days workshops |
2. To bring together Scientists, Intellectuals and Professionals working in the field of materials science to exchange ideas/knowledge/information. |
3. To encourage and support student chapters among various Engineering colleges in the state of Karnataka and enlighten them, the importance of materials properties, selection and its application. |
4. To Promote consultancy services by ASM members to solve industry problems in the area of materials. |
5. To recognize and award ASM members for their contributions to field of materials science. |
